Reflections on Flooding in Lagos: Prevention Is Better Than Destruction

Reflections on Flooding in Lagos: Prevention Is Better Than Destruction

Prince Adelaja Adeoye has just been honored at the 2024 City People Real Estate Awards for his outstanding leadership and transformative impact in Nigeria’s real estate industry.

As another rainy season approaches, the urgency to act must not be ignored.

The Lagos State Government must take proactive steps—not reactive ones—to clean, repair, and distill our drainages before the rains arrive. Every year, we witness avoidable tragedies, damaged properties, and even deaths, all because the system failed to prepare.

But it's not just the government’s job.

We, the people, must stop dumping refuse into the gutters and drains. These drainage systems are not waste bins. When they’re blocked, rainwater has nowhere to go—except into our streets, homes, and markets.

The truth is simple:
The cost of preparation is far less than the cost of destruction.

Losing lives, livelihoods, and property to floods isn’t just a seasonal inconvenience—it’s a disaster we keep allowing to happen.

Let’s act early. Let’s act together.

Leading the transformation of Nigerian real estate with initiatives like Rayfield Gardens City Estate. Bridging corporate success and civic service through innovative enterprise and youth empowerment.
